BRUCELLA IN ANIMAL
Brucellosis is a bacterial disease caused by Gram-negative coccobacilli that infects many domestic animals and causes significant economic losses due to abortion, stillbirth, weak calves, infertility, and mastitis.
How to Diagnose
-
Abortion of fully grown calf at 3rd trimester of pregnancy.

Retention of placenta after abortion.

Haemorrhagic placenta with aborted foetus.

Foul smelling uterine discharge after abortion.
-
Severe mastitis in brucella-infected cow.
-
Swelling of knee joints (hygroma).
-
Failure to conceive in a single insemination requiring repeated inseminations.

Swelling of testicle in buck.
-
Swelling of testicle in boar.
Type of Samples
Serum, blood, milk, uterine discharge, aborted foetus, placenta, and semen from male animals.
Laboratory Tests
- Direct microscopic examination.
- Serological tests – SAT, RBPT, MRT, ELISA.
- Isolation.
- PCR.

What will you do
- Dispose aborted materials and bury them in a deep pit in an isolated place using washing soda or bleaching powder.
- Clean the floor with phenol and potash solution properly.
- Separate affected animals from healthy ones and dispose of discharges regularly.
- Screen the herd for Brucella regularly.
- Avoid using a bull; adopt artificial insemination.
- On any abortion incidence, inform the nearest Veterinary Doctor / Field Assistant.
- Send appropriate samples via Veterinary Doctor / Field Assistant to the nearest diagnostic laboratory / ADMaC Core Lab-I, Khanapara for confirmation.
- Maintain personal hygiene and keep farm surroundings clean.
