ORF in Goat
Contagious ecthyma (ORF) is a highly contagious disease of sheep and goats caused by a Parapoxvirus under the Poxviridae family, characterized by proliferative and often self-limiting lesions on the lips, oral mucosa, and around the nostrils.
How to Diagnose

In affected goats, severe crust surrounds the muzzle and lesions spread to the nostrils, causing difficulty eating.
-
Ulcers appear over the tongue and gums.
-
Secondary bacterial infections can lead to mortality.
-
Kids are severely affected in ORF.
Type of Samples
From ailing goats: blood and scrapings.
Laboratory Tests
- Serology – ELISA.
- Isolation of virus.
- PCR.
