Fasciolosis Overview

Fasciolosis is a parasitic disease affecting livestock, leading to severe health and productivity losses.

  • Etiological Agent: Fasciola species (liver flukes).
  • Species Affected

    • Progressive anaemia
    • Pale mucous membrane
    • Sub-mandibular oedema (bottle jaw)
    • Loss of appetite
    • Weakness in movement
    • Isolation from the flock while grazing
    • Loss in production

    Clinical Signs

    • Avoid grazing animals in water-stagnant fields.
    • Do not feed submerged fodder directly to animals.
    • Process submerged fodder through hay/silage preparation to eliminate metacercaria.
    • Treat affected animals with Carbon tetrachloride, Rafoxanide, Nitroxynil, Niclofolan, Closantel, or Oxyclozanide under veterinary supervision.

    Preventive Measures

    • Test suspicious carcasses before movement
    • Proper disposal: deep burying with lime powder
    • Disinfection with 4% formalin or 10% caustic soda
    • Restrict grazing areas
    • Ring vaccination and disease reporting
    • Follow strict biosecurity measures
