Fasciolosis Overview
Fasciolosis is a parasitic disease affecting livestock, leading to severe health and productivity losses.
Species Affected
- Progressive anaemia
- Pale mucous membrane
- Sub-mandibular oedema (bottle jaw)
- Loss of appetite
- Weakness in movement
- Isolation from the flock while grazing
- Loss in production
Clinical Signs
- Avoid grazing animals in water-stagnant fields.
- Do not feed submerged fodder directly to animals.
- Process submerged fodder through hay/silage preparation to eliminate metacercaria.
- Treat affected animals with Carbon tetrachloride, Rafoxanide, Nitroxynil, Niclofolan, Closantel, or Oxyclozanide under veterinary supervision.
Preventive Measures
- Test suspicious carcasses before movement
- Proper disposal: deep burying with lime powder
- Disinfection with 4% formalin or 10% caustic soda
- Restrict grazing areas
- Ring vaccination and disease reporting
- Follow strict biosecurity measures
