Theileriosis Overview
Theileriosis is a tick-borne disease caused by the protozoan parasite *Theileria*. It primarily affects large ruminants, especially cross-bred cattle, leading to severe clinical symptoms and, if untreated, can be fatal.
Species Affected
- Large ruminants are most affected, with cross-bred cattle being more vulnerable.
Clinical Signs
- High temperature.
- Yellowish eyes, sometimes with heavy swelling.
- Icteric mucosal membrane of the rectum.
- Dark yellowish urine, which may turn coffee-colored.
- Antibiotics are ineffective in controlling the fever.
Preventive Measures
- Periodical application of acaricides in and around the animal shed and on the animals.
- Vaccination in endemic areas with *Theileria annulata* schizont cell culture vaccine.
- Therapeutic application of buparvaquone, effective in both early and advanced stages of the infection.
