Bengaluru, 23 December 2025:

The National Farmers’ Day (Kisan Diwas) was celebrated at the ICAR-National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics (ICAR-NIVEDI), Bengaluru, with a special focus on hygiene, animal health, and livelihood enhancement of Scheduled Caste (SC) livestock farmers. The programme was organised as part of Swachhata Pakhwada-2025, with the participation of 103 SC livestock farmers from Pemmadevarahalli village of Koratagere taluk, Tumakuru district.

An interactive farmers’ workshop was conducted, during which farmers were sensitised on cleanliness, biosecurity, disease prevention, and best management practices in animal husbandry. To promote sustainable livelihoods and nutrition security, Kaveri chicks were distributed to SC farmers for encouraging backyard poultry rearing.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Guest, Dr. P. S. Mahesh, Joint Commissioner & Director, CEAH, Bengaluru, emphasised that backyard poultry rearing plays a vital role in supporting rural livelihoods and improving household nutrition. He highlighted that maintaining hygiene, clean housing, safe feed and water, and disease prevention are essential for healthy birds and economic returns from poultry farming. He also emphasised on scientific dairy and sheep and goat farming.

The Guest of Honour, Dr. Sandip Khurana, former Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIRB, Hisar, underscored the importance of adopting scientific livestock and poultry management practices, with special emphasis on hygiene as a key pillar for disease control and productivity enhancement.

In his address, Dr. Baldev R. Gulati, Director, ICAR-NIVEDI, highlighted various Government of India initiatives aimed at supporting farmers and livestock owners to increase their income. He particularly referred to the recently approved VB-G RAM G bill, under which 125 days of assured wage employment will be provided to farmers, strengthening farmers’ income security. He emphasised that livestock-based interventions, combined with hygiene, disease prevention, and skill development, are critical for inclusive and sustainable rural growth.

Dr. Rajeswari Shome, Principal Scientist, introduced the significance of Kisan Diwas and briefed participants on the institute’s activities for farmer welfare.
