Protein-G Based Indirect ELISA Kit

A breakthrough in affordable brucellosis surveillance for Indian livestock

Problem Description

Brucellosis in Indian livestock causes a median loss of US $3.4 billion/annum (INR 22,554 crores) and is a serious zoonotic threat. Until 2012, India relied on costly imported ELISA kits for brucellosis diagnosis, escalating testing costs and burdening the national exchequer. Lack of indigenous kits hindered large-scale screening in the country.

Solution Description

Recognizing the need for cost-effective diagnostics, ICAR-NIVEDI developed and validated an indigenous Protein-G based iELISA kit. It is specifically designed for mass screening of cattle and buffaloes in India.

  • Sensitivity: 98% in cattle, 92% in buffaloes
  • Specificity: 95% in cattle, 98% in buffaloes
  • Patent No.: 335659 (Dated 20.04.2020)
  • 298 kits distributed to 60 veterinary institutions (2012–present)
  • Used in screening over 1.60 lakh bovines nationwide
  • Cost/sample: ₹35.10 (vs ₹178.26 for imported kits)

The NIVEDI iELISA kit offers a locally-developed, cost-effective solution for brucellosis screening, significantly reducing reliance on expensive imports and enabling widespread testing.
