ICAR-NIVEDI Concludes National One Health Training on Zoonotic Disease Diagnostics

Five-day intensive programme strengthens laboratory capacity for brucellosis, leptospirosis, and scrub typhus detection under NOHPPCZ-NCDC framework

ICAR-National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics (ICAR-NIVEDI), Bengaluru, successfully concluded a five-day national hands-on training on "Laboratory Diagnosis of Zoonotic Diseases for One Health Readiness" from 2-6 February 2026, conducted under the National One Health Programme for Prevention and Control of Zoonoses (NOHPPCZ) of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Government of India.

Programme Overview

The programme trained 20 participants from seven states, including IDSP personnel, laboratory technicians, and medical and veterinary professionals. The training focused on hands-on diagnosis of priority zoonotic diseases such as brucellosis, leptospirosis, and scrub typhus, with practical exposure to serological and molecular diagnostic techniques, biosafety, and quality practices within a One Health framework.

Dr V. Balamurugan, Course Coordinator, reported that pre- and post-training assessments demonstrated a significant improvement in participant competencies. The structured evaluation approach ensured measurable learning outcomes and confirmed the effectiveness of the hands-on training methodology.

Dr Rajeswari Shome, Principal Scientist, emphasized the importance of standardized diagnostic protocols and quality assurance. She highlighted that uniform diagnostic approaches across laboratories are essential for reliable surveillance data and effective disease management at the national level.

"Accurate laboratory diagnostics and intersectoral coordination play a critical role in strengthening national preparedness for zoonotic diseases."
— Dr Baldev R. Gulati, Director, ICAR-NIVEDI

Addressing the participants, Dr Baldev R. Gulati, Director, ICAR-NIVEDI, highlighted the critical role of accurate laboratory diagnostics and intersectoral coordination in strengthening national preparedness for zoonotic diseases. He underscored the need for continuous capacity building to maintain readiness for emerging zoonotic threats.

Valedictory Session and Certificate Distribution

The programme concluded with a valedictory session and distribution of certificates. The Guest of Honour, Dr S. Nagarathna (NIMHANS, Bengaluru), underscored the value of hands-on laboratory training and integrated surveillance for effective zoonotic disease control and management. She emphasized that such collaborative training initiatives between veterinary and human health sectors are crucial for building a robust One Health ecosystem in the country.

Programme Impact

The training has significantly enhanced the diagnostic capabilities of participants from seven states, creating a stronger network of trained professionals capable of responding to zoonotic disease challenges. The intersectoral participation of IDSP personnel, laboratory technicians, and medical and veterinary professionals exemplifies the One Health approach in action.
